Blue Jays Take Division Three Title

Sparken Hill Blue Jays secured the Division Three League title with an 8-2 victory over Worksop Owls in their final game of the season. After Worksop Welfare Cypriots ‘A’ slipped up last week it meant that the Blue Jays only needed to draw their final league game to secure the title but they went one better with victory over an improving Worksop Owls side. For the Blue Jays Connor Bettley once again remained unbeaten which gave his side a platform to build on and to go on to win the match and secure all three points. Bettley enjoyed straight sets wins over both Harry Beer and Jasper Turner and a 4 sets win over Louis Spray and he was well supported by Dave Lee and Dave Rix who both added two wins each to their names with Lee beating Turner and Beer whilst Rix defeated Beer and Spray in some very close games. Bettley then had a hand in winning the doubles rubber when he teamed up with Lee to beat Spray and Turner in straight sets. In the end the Blue Jays took the title by 3 points from Cypriots ‘A’ winning 14 out of their 16 matches, only drawing once and losing once to cap a great season for them.
Elsewhere in the division Worksop Welfare Cypriots ‘B’ ended their season by playing two league matches on the same night whilst only having two players! They lost one match to Sparken Hill Falcons which was no surprise starting from 3-0 down and when Jordan Potter beat both Nick Sievewright and Daniel Saul then the writing was on the wall. Mick Potter also defeated Sievewright as did Neil Penny but they both lost out to Saul who beat them both and which were the Cypriots only wins against the Falcons as they also lost the doubles.
They did fare a little better in their other match as they beat DTH Redlands Red Devils 6-4 but because of the ruling in place that a team can only achieve a 5-5 draw when only fielding two players it meant that they only went home with a point rather than all three. Saul beat all three Red Devils in Phil Daly, Harry Clarke, Jacob Hodkinson but his team mate Sievewright could not repeat the feat beating Clarke and Hodkinson but losing out to Daly in a 5-set thriller. Sievewright and Saul then beat Clarke and Hodkinson in the doubles but it was all irrelevant as they ended up with a 5-5 draw.
DTH Redlands Tarr Babies finished their league programme off with an impressive 8-2 away win at Sparken Hill Hawks with veteran Keith Bloomfield returning a hat trick of wins over Justin Flear, Sam McFarland and Scott Lee but anything the older players can do then the younger ones can do too as Ted Rizzo also won all his three games which included the game of the night as he and McFarland went toe to toe before Rizzo won the deciding set to complete his hat trick. Roman Rosser also had a good night as he defeated both Lee and Flear before going down to McFarland. McFarland and Lee took the doubles match for the Hawks as they defeated Rosser and another veteran in Jack Tarr.
