Budworth Fires Nomads To Promotion
Jayden Budworth's impressive hat trick against Stanley Street 'C' helped secure the win and the 3 points Manton Nomads required to clinch promotion to Division One. In a hard fought match Budworth was the star of the show as she defeated all three Riauba brothers Martynas, Orestas and Valentinas with some fabulous attacking table tennis and her three wins were the perfect base for the Nomads to go on and win the match. Despite Budworth's hat trick the Nomads didn't have it all their own way as Orestas defeated Rob Vaughan and Steve Elkin lost in a terrific 5 set thriller to Valentinas but that was Street 'C's lot as Elkin and Vaughan clinched the doubles in straight sets to secure an 8-2 win and with it a place in Division One next season.
The other team that look odds on to join Nomads in Division One next season are Ryton Park Eagles who are currently sat in the second promotion place in the Division Two table and also harbour aspirations to go up as Champions but their chances of doing both received a blow this week with a defeat to Manton Sports. Neither side could field their strongest team but this had more of an effect on the Eagles as they had to play a player up from the division below in Brian Hall and despite his best efforts he couldn't beat any of the Sports trio of John Lowde, Keith Smith or Alan Wilson to help the Eagles in their task. However it was a different story for John Hallgarth as he beat all three Sports players and when Keith Swift defeated Smith it left the Eagles 5-4 down going into the doubles set and in with a chance of snatching a much needed draw. Hallgarth and Swift paired up to take on Lowde and Smith and despite probably being slight favourites to take the doubles Hallgarth and Swift could no nothing to stop Lowde and Smith winning in straight sets to clinch a 6-4 victory.
The defeat now leaves the Eagles 9 points behind Manton Nomads with a game in hand.
As one team from Ryton Park were battling for promotion in Division Two this week another Ryton Park side had relegation from it confirmed. Ryton Park Cougars 10-0 defeat to DTH Redlands X-Youth condemned them to life in Division Three next season and despite not winning a match so far this season the Cougars must be applauded for the fabulous spirit in which they have played every game and they will surely have learnt from their first ever season in Division Two. For the X-Youth Ewan Pickersgill won his first ever hat trick for the X-Youth team and there were also trebles for both Jeff Reay and Mark Bloomer with Reay and Bloomer winning the doubles to only add to the Eagles misery as they were whitewashed to send them on their way to Division Three for next season.
The other side that will nearly certainly go down with them are DTH Redlands Rookies but they had a stay of execution this week as they pulled off a great 6-4 win over Stanley Street 'B'. Despite a solid hat trick from Street's Adam Hamilton the Rookies still managed to go on and win the match after George Agnew and Derek Piper both beat Glyn Payne and Mitchell Radford with Alan Brown adding a solo win over Payne. Special mention must go to Radford who was playing up from Division Three and despite the divisional gap still managed to beat the Rookies Alan Brown but it wasn't enough to stop his side sliding to defeat as Piper and Brown took the doubles and with it the match.
The win now leaves the Rookies 14 points behind the team 3rd from bottom with only 18 points to play for and if results go against them next week they could find themselves relegated alongside Ryton Park Cougars.
All the four sides vying for promotion in Division Three all won this week to keep the pressure on each other as we go into the business end of the league season. Stanley Street Rascals won 9-1 away at Ryton Park Falcons, Stanley Street 'D' beat On-Line Elks 8-2 at home, Stanley Street Cypriots beat their club colleagues Stanley Street 'D' 8-2 whilst DTH Redlands Tarr Babies had a 7-3 win over Ryton Park Dragons, despite not having their best player in Josh Nelson in the side.
The results mean that it's pretty much as you were with Stanley Street 'D' heading up the Division Three table by a point from the Tarr Babies with the Rascals and Cypriots a further one point and 3 points behind respectively but the Tarr Babies and Cypriots do have a game in hand on the other two.
