Cypriots Early Leaders In Division Three
Worksop Welfare Cypriots 'A' have made a great start to their Division Three campaign winning all three of their first three matches. Their latest victory came against Worksop Owls who find themselves languishing at the wrong end of the table and were always going to struggle against the league leaders. For the Cypriots side Farhad Saiepour was player of the match winning all his three singles games and also having a hand in winning the doubles with his team mate Andrew Hughes. Hughes added two singles wins of his own beating both Finlay Coburn and Louis Spray but he lost in 5 sets to Jasper Turner who also beat Kay Wilson in 5 sets. Wilson who has made a return to table tennis after many years away from the sport has made a good start to her comeback and despite losing to Turner beat both Coburn and Spray to make it 6 wins out of 9 since her return. The final match score was 8-2 to the Cypriots 'A' outfit which now leaves them 3 points clear at the top having played a game more than the teams in second and third place.
The side in 3rd place, Worksop Welfare Cypriots 'B' didn't have a game this week but Sparken Hill Falcons kept up the pressure on the league leaders with a 9-1 win away at DTH Redlands Red Devils who this season are making their first appearance in the league. There were hat tricks all round for the Falcons with Mick Potter, Jordan Potter and Kyle Moore all defeating Cliff Briggs, Jacob Hopkinson and Harry Clarke but the Red Devils did manage to win the doubles with Briggs and Hopkinson beating the Potters Mick and Jordan in straight sets to avoid a whitewash.
Two other Sparken Hill sides were in action this week with the Hawks and the Blue Jays facing each other in what turned out to be an entertaining match. The Hawks go off to a great start as Lee Banton beat both Connor Bettley and Dave Rix to leave his side 2-2 after the first four games but that was the last time the Hawks managed to trouble the scorers as they lost the next 6 sets to eventually go down 8-2. For the Blue Jays Ivan Stallworthy was on top form beating Banton, Brian Hall and Scott Lee in straight sets to comfortably remain unbeaten in the singles. Stallworthy then teamed up with Bettley to take the doubles against Banton and Lee, again in straight sets.
Another player returning to the Worksop League after a few years away is veteran Keith Bloomfield who has now won 50% of his singles games since his return. Bloomfield and his fellow DTH Redlands Tarr Babies team mates managed to register their first win of the season in a close contest with Real North Notts 'B'. An Adam Pinches hat trick and two wins from Bloomfield helped the Tarr Babies to a 6-4 win with Jack Tarr joining Pinches to take the doubles set. All three of the Real North Notts players managed to get on the score sheet with Glen Gillgrass, Elliott Jordan and Tom Ogley all managing to beat Roman Rosser with Jordan also beating Bloomfield in a 5 set battle.
