Eagles Soar Into David Hooton Trophy Final
Ryton Park Eagles put there miserable league form behind them to knock Worksop Miners Welfare 'A' out of the David Hooton Handicap Trophy and put themselves into the final where they will play Stanley Street 'A'. It was a real team performance for the Eagles with all three players making telling contributions to their teams points total especially Helmuth Osborne who had good wins over both Andrew Cave and Stuart Element to get his side off to a great start but he wasn't alone as Alex Olliffe also chipped in with a convincing win over Cave. For the Welfare side Dave Marsh won both his singles matches comfortably but it was in the three doubles games that the Eagles had most success winning two of them and only losing the third one by 4 points which all meant that the Eagles had only lost by 2 points on the night before the handicap points were added. The Eagles had 220to add and with Welfare 'A' only having 161 it meant that the Eagles ran out winners by 545 points to 488.
Despite a great cup performance the Eagles miserable league form continued this week as they went down 9-1 to a Manton Nomads side who have now all but dispelled any relegation fears and with this win increased the gap to 15 points between themselves and the Eagles with only 15 points left to play for this season. Both Sarah Short and Kartik Lakhani recorded three wins each against the Eagles side of Brian Allen, John Hallgarth and Keith Swift with the only Eagles success coming when Allen beat Rob Vaughan. Short and Vaughan then teamed up to beat Hallgarth and Swift in straight sets to compound the Eagles misery.
On the same night at the same venue another Ryton Park v Manton match took place with ironically the same 9-1 scoreline. Ryton Park Adders could do nothing to halt their slide towards Division Two as they were well and truly beaten by Manton Misfits for whom both Kerry Harvey and Steve Lyon registered hat tricks with Kalpesh Bhatt adding a further two wins, only losing to Andy Lee before he and Harvey teamed up to take the doubles.
DTH Redlands Roosters continued their march towards the Division One title with their 16th straight league win with their latest victims being Worksop Miners Welfare 'A'. The performances of the night both involved Welfare's Richard Element as he firstly ended Ernest Mpundu's unbeaten record with a terrific 5 set win but then surprisingly lost in straight sets to Clive Mitchell. Element went on to beat Steve Fox but his two wins were the only wins that the Welfare side cold manage as they eventually went down 8-2.
DTH Redlands Fluffy Toys continued to try to hang on to the Roosters tails with a solid 8-2 win over Stanley Street 'A' who were looking for points to keep enough distance between the bottom tow teams in the division. For the Toys both Steve Walker and Steve Johnson were in top form as they both registered hat tricks with Lea Dickinson adding a single win over Dave Hodgkin before losing out to both Matthew Williams and Peter Eyre, however she did team up with Johnson to defeat Williams and Eyre in the doubles.
