Finalists Now Known In Divisional Cup Competitions

With all the ups and downs in all three divisions coming to a close last week it was now down to the final round of Divisional Cup matches to decide which teams in each division would contest next week’s finals at Sparken Hill.
In the David Hooton Trophy for Division One sides Sparken Hill Buzzards made it through by virtue of their win over Sparken Hill Starlings which was their third win out of three in their group which meant they topped the group and therefore made it through to the final. Chris Cattell had a fine night for the Buzzards as he won his two singles games and the two doubles games he was involved in and gave the Buzzards the springboard to go on to win the match. Cattell was well supported by both Kartik Lakhani and Terry Emmerson who both made telling contributions to their win.
Their opponents in the final took some working out as three teams had all finished level at the top of the other group with two wins each and as they had all won a match against another the finalists would be decided by points difference. Stanley Street ‘A’ had managed to beat DTH Redlands X-Youth 539-496 to finish on two wins and Worksop Miners Welfare beat two man DTH Redlands Monsters 454-242 to also finish on two wins along with DTH Redlands X-Youth and after all the points were added up it was Worksop Miners Welfare who went through as they had he better points difference out of all three teams.
The same scenario also happened in the Reg Wilcox Trophy for Division Two sides with Worksop Welfare Harriers ‘A’ qualifying for their respective final by virtue of having a better points difference.
The Harriers finished level with Sparken Hill Eagles and Manton Sports with the latter surely rueing the decision not to play their best team as they comfortably lost to the Eagles when a win would have put them through to the final. Instead it was Worksop Welfare Harriers ‘A’ that will contest the final on Tuesday the 17th of April where they will be up against Worksop Welfare Snipers who made it through by winning all their three group games, the last of which was over Division Two champions Sparken Hill Vultures in a great match that ebbed and flowed throughout. The Vultures managed to actually win the game on the table by 328-320 but after both team’s handicap points were added it was the Snipers that came out on top by 406 points to 391 and deservedly went through to the final.
The final of the MBE Trophy for Division Three teams will feature two sides from Sparken Hill in he Falcons and the Hawks after both teams topped their respective groups and again both made it went through to the final by having a better points difference than the other teams in their groups. The Falcons who are looking to do the league and cup double lost their last group match by 3 points to Worksop Welfare Harriers ‘B’ but still managed to make it to the final.
In the other group in Division Three Sparken Hill Hawks won their group despite losing their last match against DTH Redlands Red Devils who earnt themselves a well-deserved win. The Red Devils only lost by one point on the table but had a slightly better handicap and eventually ran out winners by a score line of 498-492. DTH Redlands Demolition Men who played their final group match 2 days later still had a chance of making it through to the final but had to beat The Real Deal by a decent score to get there but despite winning the match they could only manage to win by 18 points when a win by 78 points was required.
