Joggers Run Into Trouble Against X-Youth
Promotion chasing DTH Redlands Joggers had the misfortune of running into their inform club colleagues DTH Redlands X-Youth this week and suffered a setback in their quest to finish in the top two promotion places in Division Two. The X-Youth's Jeff Reay did most of the damage as he recorded wins in straight sets against all three Joggers players in Kyle McIntosh, Matthew Mudd and Lewis Comley. Reay was well supported by the formidable Mark Bloomer who had wins over both McIntosh and Mudd but losing out to Comley. Comley also beat Clive Eden as did Mudd before Eden managed to beat McIntosh in 5 sets to leave the X-Youth 6-3 ahead after the singles matches. In the doubles set Reay teamed up with Eden for X-Youth and they managed to beat Mudd and Comley coming from 2-1 down to win 3-2 in the deciding set to cement a 7-3 victory which now moves them up into 3rd place and only 2 points behind the Joggers in 2nd.
The league leaders DTH Redlands Monsters had a comfortable 10-0 win against bottom side Stanley Street Cypriots who despite to date not having registered a point this season are putting in some good performances despite seven straight league defeats. The three Riauba brothers of Martynas, Orestas and Valentinas all beat the three Cypriot players of Graham Stent, Neil Fisher and Mitchell Radford with Martynas and Orestas beating Fisher and Radford in straight sets to take the doubles to stretch their lead at the top to 3 points.
Two of the teams in the chasing pack for the promotion places met this week with Worksop Miners Welfare 'B' playing hosts to Stanley Street 'B'. Street 'B' after a bright start to their league campaign have slipped away in recent weeks and their match with Welfare 'B' was to be no different as they slipped to a 7-3 defeat. For the Welfare side Erlands Skels hit top form as he registered a hat trick of wins over Lee Webb, Glyn Williams and Paul Linfield to set his team on their way to victory. Adam Hamilton also got in on the act as he beat both Webb and Williams but couldn't quite match his team mate with a hat trick as he lost out to the experienced campaigner Paul Linfield. Welfare's third player Glyn Payne also contributed to his team's victory as he managed a solo win over Williams with Hamilton and Skels teaming up to take the doubles.
After a shaky start to the season Manton Tigers are starting to move up the Division Two table and another win this week has seen them move 4 points clear of the relegation zone. Hat tricks for both Bill Bateman and Dave Bowns and a double from Chris Mokes set them up for a 9-1 win over Stanley Street Cypriots. The only joy for the Cypriots came when George Makrakis beat Chris Mokes after Mokes and Bowns had beaten Ralph Rodda and Makrakis in the doubles.
Division One side Ryton Park Eagles won their first match league of the season in a 7-3 win over Worksop Welfare 'A'. For the Welfare side Richard Element won all his three games but that was the only joy they had as both Ken Alvey and Dave Marsh lost all their games against the Eagles Brian Allen, Helmuth Osborne and Dave Kirkup with Osborne and Kirkup winning the doubles set against Element and Marsh.
