League Takes Another Positive Step Forward
The Worksop & District Table Tennis League have made even more progress with the announcement that they are to start a new table tennis club on Saturday mornings at Worksop Leisure Centre. The new club will start this Saturday the 23rd of February from 9.00am to -11.45 am. The league have decided to commence with the new sessions due is to the fact that the sessions at Redlands (which are also on a Saturday morning) have become so popular and are now oversubscribed. With both clubs running this will put the league in an even stronger position for the future and will be a useful new venue to promote our sport. The fees for the open sessions at Worksop Leisure Centre on Valley Road will be £3.00 for adults and just £2.00 for under 16's.
Everyone is welcome whatever level of table tennis they play and further details can be obtained from Glyn Williams on 07507-126969.
Back to matters on the table and this week saw the league reach the quarter final stage of their premier cup competition the Handicap Shield and the first team to successfully negotiate their way into the semi-finals were division one side Zygabytes. They were up against fellow division one side in DTH Redlands Joggers who struggling for players had to pull a player up from division two and despite battling hard and having some success when Peter Cowburn beat both Joe Zygadlo and Bob Hume they couldn't amass enough points to win the match. For the Zygabytes outfit Dean Brookes had a terrific night beating all three Joggers players and in the process only dropping 52 points in total. Brookes was well backed up by Joe Zygadlo who only lost to Cowburn and with Bob Hume also chipping in with valuable points at the right time it meant that the Zygabytes had enough points on the board to make it through to the next round even when the handicap of 65 points was added to the Joggers total, the Zygabytes still ran out winners by 335 points to 319.
Two other teams that were hoping to join the Zygabytes in the semi-finals were DTH Redlands Allsorts of division three and division two side Manton Tigers with the Allsorts having to give up home advantage due to availability at their own venue. Despite this the Allsorts put in a good performance with captain Neil Houghton, Caius Tweed and Josh Nelson all managing to register valuable points even though the Tigers put out their strongest side. All three Allsorts players lost all of their games in straight sets against the stronger Tigers players in Bill Bateman, Paul Allison and Dave Bowns with Allison being the pick of the bunch in only dropping 37 points altogether. The Tigers amassed the maximum points possible on the night of 378 with the Allsorts battling away to reach 132 but with a handicap of 260 points being awarded to them at the end the Allsorts just won the contest by 14 points winning 392-378.
