Lee & Olliffe Crowned DTH Senior Doubles Champions
Andy Lee and Alex Olliffe have won the DTH Senior Doubles competition after a fabulous night of table tennis at Ryton Park School. Lee and Olliffe who were paired together on the night after the seedings had been completed remained unbeaten in the group stages winning all their four matches. They reached the semi finals by comfortably topping Group B ahead of Runners Up Peter Eyre and Mark Bloomer who also joined them in the semi finals . In Group A it was a much tighter affair and although Terry Curran and Jeff Reay won all of their group games they only just managed to pip Steve Elkin and Clive Eden by two points to win the group with both pairings going through the semi final stage.
Both semi finals were close affairs with Curran and Reay finally managing to overcome Eyre and Bloomer by a 31-29 score line to book their place in the final where Lee and Olliffe awaited them after they just edged out Elkin and Eden 31-28 in the second semi final. The final was played over the best of three games with Lee and Olliffe taking the first game in a close contest 21-17 with everyone expecting the second game to be just as close, however Lee and Olliffe took a big early lead and never looked like squandering it and eventually won it 21-13 to clinch the title which for Lee was an especially sweet moment after losing in four previous finals.
Back to league action and both Divisions Two and Three have runaway leaders who seem odds on to become champions of their respective divisions. Stanley Street 'A' made it 9 wins out of 9 with their latest victory coming over Manton Tigers. For the Street Peter Eyre himself remains unbeaten this season and has now won 24 games out of 24 and yet another hat trick was to follow as he beat Bill Bateman, Paul Allison and Dave Bownes. Alex Millward also won all his three games with the Tigers only joy coming when Allison beat Paul Linfield in 5 sets to notch up their only win in a 9-1 defeat.
Ryton Park Eagles caught up on their games by playing two matches on one night beating Manton Sports 9-1 but then losing to DTH Redlands Red Bulls 8-2 albeit with a much changed side.
Other Division Two Results: Stanley Street 'B' 3 DTH Redlands Geriatrics 7, DTH Redlands Morris Men 3 DTH Redlands Red Bulls
Division Three leaders DTH Redlands X-Youth look unstoppable at the moment and on current form could go through the whole season winning every game. Their latest success came against Centre For Sport who in truth never looked like troubling the scorers and eventually went down 10-0 with hat tricks all round for the X-Youth team of Jeff Reay, Mark Bloomer and Matt Turner with Reay and Turner teaming up to take the doubles.
Two of the teams chasing X-Youth both won to keep the pressure on the leaders, DTH Redlands Tarr Babies beat Ryton Park Dragons 10-0 and DTH Redlands Rookies overcame club colleagues the Allsorts 8-2.
Division One defending champions DTH Redlands Fluffy Toys aren't finding things easy at the moment due to player injuries and could only field two players against DTH Redlands Roosters. Despite having to start 3-0 down they fought back to gain an unlikely draw with Steve Walker winning all his three games, Steve Fox chipped in with one before the two of them paired up to win the doubles. For the Roosters Ernest Mpundu and Phil Beresford won the only games on the night both beating Fox.
