Lyon and McIntosh Take Two Titles Each At First Finals Night
Both Steve Lyon and Tom Mcintosh claimed two individual titles each at the first of the League's Annual Championship Nights. First up in the order of play was the Cadet Final between Tom McIntosh and his brother Kyle who was hoping to defend the title he won last year and despite taking the first game in the best of 5 contest it was his brother Tom who managed to win the next three games to clinch the title for the first time. In the Boys U12 Final Tom was attempting to defend his title and had things a little more his own way with a straight sets victory over Lewis Comley who had done well to reach the final with Tom finally winning 11-7, 11-5, 11-1.
Steve Lyon also qualified for two finals with the first one being against Dave Capewell in the Over 60's and the Global Marble player took no time at all in comfortably dispatching Capewell in straight sets but in the Over 50's final he came up against an in form Joe Zygadlo in a match that was to go all the way to a deciding 5th set. Lyon took the first set only for Zygadlo to take the next two to lead 2-1 but back came Lyon to square the match to take it into a deciding set which Lyon managed to win 11-9 to claim his second title of the night.
On a good night for Global Marble players Kerry Radford had also reached two finals but despite comfortably winning the Ladies Singles Final against Amber Zygadlo she couldn't quite repeat the feat in the Handicap Singles Final against Clive Eden who was awarded a start due to the handicapping system that Radford just couldn't claw back and she eventually lost in straight sets.
Another Global player Kalpesh Bhatt reached the Draw Doubles final and when the draw was made on the night he was paired with Open Singles Champion from last season Richard Wesley with the other pairing being Tom Wesley and Alex Millward. Bhatt and Richard Wesley didn't take long to gel and soon raced away with the final taking it in straight sets.
The last final of the night was the Over 40's final between Joe Zygadlo and Chris Cattell which was a close and intriguing contest throughout, Zygadlo took the first game 11-9 but Cattell took the next three games 13-11, 15-13, 11-8 to eventually grind out the win and take the title.
