Ryton Park Win First Ever 5-5 Shootout

The Leagues first ever 5-5 shoot out was played out between Ryton Park Eagles and Manton Sports. The new league points system for this season sees 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and a further point up for grabs in the 5-5 shoot out if the match is drawn. For the much fancied Eagles Gary Scott put in a strong performance winning all his three games with Carl Stones surprisingly only adding a solitary win before teaming up with Scott in the doubles to beat John Lowde and Alan Smith to ensure a 5-5 draw. Both Lowde and Wilson won two singles games each for Sports whilst Keith Smith chipped in with a win over Ivan Stallworthy who was playing up from Division Three. The 5-5 score line ensured a point for each side before the teams lined up for the 5-5 shootout to decide who would win the extra point. First up was Lowde and Stallworthy with Stallworthy putting in a fabulous effort to only leave the Eagles 10-9 down at the first changeover. Stones then clawed back the deficit in leg two against Smith to put the Eagles 20-17 in front at the 2nd changeover. It was all now down to Wilson and Scott to decide who would make history and win the first ever shootout and Scott made certain of the extra point for his team by eventually running out 31-24 winners.

Division Three
In their first ever match in the Worksop League DTH Redlands Cypriots made a surprising winning start by defeating their more experienced opponents Centre For Sport by a 7-3 margin. Despite a terrific hat trick from Mark Wilson, Centre For Sport couldn't stop the Cypriot team of Jason Poole, Conor Bell and Adam Hamilton all winning two games each to put them out of sight. The doubles was something of a rarity as none of the players that played the singles matches actually played in the doubles! The Cypriots played Fiona Halpin-Stent and Alan Hamilton whilst Sport drafted in their more experienced pairing of Declan Wilson and Glen Gillgrass but it didn't help as Halpin-Stent and Hamilton won an entertaining doubles rubber by 3 games to 1.

Division One
The closest game in Division One this week was between DTH Redlands Joggers and their club colleagues the Roosters. The Roosters looked like they were going to run away with it in the early stages as they streaked into the lead with Dave Gascoyne leading the way winning his first two games. Sarah Short and Rick Harris both won their opening games to leave them 4-0 and cruising. However, the Joggers soon picked up the pace by winning the doubles as Terry Emmerson and Peter Cowburn won a momentous battle to beat Harris and Short in 5 sets. After the doubles both Harris and Smith added further singles wins to leave the result in no doubt but a spirited effort from the Joggers saw them win the last three matches of the night to gain a respectable score line in defeat of 4-6. Gascoyne, Smith and Harris all won two games each for the Roosters whilst for the Joggers Cowburn, Emmerson and Barry Tasker all won a single game each.
