Street 'A' And Tarr Babies Win Divisional Trophy Finals
Stanley Street 'A' and DTH Redlands Tarr Babies have won this seasons Division One and Division Three Trophy Finals respectively.
Stanley Street 'A's opponents in the Division One final, The David Hooton Trophy were MBE who despite having to give their opponents 117 points after the handicaps were applied must have fancied their chances of winning the match especially as Street 'A' had finished 25 points behind them in the league but they didn't make a great start in reducing the deficit as Mick Bell lost to Alex Millward and when in the next match Dave Marsh only beat Matt Williams by a single point they knew they were up against it. The deficit did start to come down with some good wins for Mick Bell and Dave Marsh over Kyle McIntosh and Craig Straw over Matt Williams but it was all in vain as Street 'A', despite losing by 98 points on the table eventually ran out winners by 485 points to 466.
In the MBE Trophy final for Division Three teams DTH Redlands Tarr Babies who the week before had endured a double whammy missing out on the Division Three title and promotion in the last week of the league season found themselves up against On-Line Elks and were hoping to put the disappointment of their league campaign behind them by winning the final. The Elks got off to a great start when Jonno Blood beat Adam Pinches and Glen Gillgrass beat Greg Suchalski to increase their lead to 61 points including the handicap difference but the Tarr Babies stuck to their task and started to chip away at the Elks lead. Suchalski and Josh Nelson defeated Blood and Jerry Collins in one of the doubles matches by 24 points, Nelson then beat Gillgrass by 15 points in the next singles match and when Pinches beat Collins by 29 points the Tarr Babies were in front for the first time in the match, a lead that they didn't let slip as they won the next 4 games to run out winners by 490 points to 440 points.
The curtain came down on league matches this week and with all the titles, promotion and relegation issues already sorted it meant teams were only playing for pride. Division One side MBE finished their season off with a win and a defeat. Their win came against bottom side Manton Tigers who despite having a tough season have put in some spirited displays but found MBE too hot to handle as Mick Bell, Andrew Cave and Dave Marsh all won hat tricks with Cave and Marsh taking the doubles to complete a 10-0 whitewash. Their defeat came against DTH Redlands Roosters who have had a good season finishing 3rd in the league and at one pint looking like they could challenge for the title and it was an all round performance for the Roosters as Dave Gascoyne, Rick Harris and Clive Mitchell all won 2 games each to record a 6-4 win.
Manton Misfits finished their league campaign off strongly finishing in mid table despite at one point having relegation worries and they ended their season with an 8-2 win away at Ryton Park Adders. Both Terry Emmerson and Ian Henderson remained unbeaten and The Adders only singles success came when Andy Lee beat Kartik Lakhani in straight sets and the only other joy the Adders had was when Lee and Ivan Guilliatt won the doubles but it was nowhere near enough to stop the Misfits comfortably winning 8-2.
