The subject of illegal serving was once again brought up at the League's latest Committee meeting last Monday and in particular that there are players in our league who are clearly serving illegaly so I have been asked to send an e-mail round reminding EVERYONE of the rules of serving.
I appreciate that this isn't a professional league or the World Championships but if someone is gaining an advantage from not following the rules of the game then they have an unfair advantage which is obviously not right.
The rules are listed below:
ITTF Rules
2.6
THE SERVICE
2.6.1
Service shall start with the ball resting freely on the open palm of the server's stationary free hand.
2.6.2
The server shall then project the ball near vertically upwards, without imparting spin, so that it rises at least 16 cm after leaving the palm of the free hand and then falls without touching anything before being struck.
2.6.3
As the ball is falling the server shall strike it so that it touches first his court and then touches directly the receiver's court; in doubles, the ball shall touch successively the right half court of server and receiver.
2.6.4
From the start of service until it is struck, the ball shall be above the level of the playing surface and behind the server's end line, and it shall not be hidden from the receiver by the server or his doubles partner or by anything they wear or carry.
2.6.5
As soon as the ball has been projected, the server’s free arm and hand shall be removed from the area between the ball and the net.
2.6.6
It is the responsibility of the player to serve so that the umpire or the assistant umpire can be satisfied that he complies with the requirements of the Law and either may decide that a service is illegal.
2.6.6.1
If either the umpire or the assistant umpire is not sure about the legality of a service he may, on the first occasion in a match, interrupt play and warn the server, but any subsequent service by that player or his doubles partner which is not clearly legal shall be considered incorrect.
2.6.7
Exceptionally, the umpire may relax the requirements for a good service where he is satisfied that compliance is prevented by physical disability

Howard Knott was enquiring the other day as to the best way to submit a scorecard.
The best way is to take a photo of the card and e-mail to me at [email protected]
You can also send the photo via a Facebook message either to myself or through the Worksop League's Facebook page.
If either of the above isn't your preferred method then you can either What's App it me or even send it in a text message.
Failing that you can do it like they used to do it in the olden days and post it to me!!

We now have a new results, league tables and averages section on the leagues website www.worksoptabletennisleague.com
Once you click on the relevant button to view a league table for example all you have to do to get back to the leagues website is click on the back arrow on the top left hand side of your browser.
The way results are now entered on to the new platform makes it even more important that scorecards are filled in correctly and in full with every section filled out because the detail of the results in the new system is more in depth.
For example, so far this season I have had cards with no doubles pairings, no individual sets won, the home and the away teams the wrong way round and even one team putting their name down as a First Division side when in fact they play in Division Three!!
Please be more vigilant.
