Toys R Walloped!
Reigning Champions DTH Redlands Fluffy Toys who for so long have been used to having things all their own way and sitting on top of Division One season after season were this week brought crashing down to earth with a bang and what a bang it was! Club colleagues and title rivals the Roosters not only inflicted only the Toys second league defeat in three seasons but did it in clinical fashion by hammering them 10-0. There were hat tricks all round for the Roosters trio of Tom McIntosh, Ernest Mpundu and Steve Fox with Fox and Mpundu teaming up to take the doubles to make it five wins out of five to leave them top of the table. The Toys team which was made up of Steve Johnson, Lea Dickinson and Mick Brooks had no answer to the Roosters onslaught and if they are to retain their title then they surely can't afford to suffer another heavy loss like this one.
Another team that remain unbeaten in Division One are Manton Misfits who would also have won five from five if they hadn't had to play two matches with a player short and therefore fell fowl of rule 7f which means that if a team turn with only two players then the best result that they can obtain is a draw with the Misfits twice having actually beaten sides 6-4 only to find that the result has been amended to a 5-5 draw. In their latest match they were up against their club colleagues Manton Nomads and despite the Nomads Sarah Short winning all her three games it wasn't enough to affect the outcome of the match with the Misfits eventually winning 7-3. The Misfits trio of Kerry Harvey, Kalpesh Bhatt and Malcolm Manuel all managed to beat the Nomads Steve Elkin and Kartik Lakhani with Harvey and Bhatt teaming up to beat Elkin and Short in the doubles in 5 sets.
The pain continued for the two Division One Ryton Park teams this week as they both suffered another defeat with the Eagles nearly grabbing a draw at home to Stanley Street 'A'. Helmuth Osbourne won all his three games for the Eagles and then helped his team mate John Hallgarth to win the doubles but it wasn't enough to stop them slipping to a 6-4 defeat. All three of Stanley Streets players won 2 games each beating the Eagles John Hallgarth and Keith Swift to make it two wins on the trot for Street 'A' as they continue to pull away from the relegation zone.
One team who are firmly in the relegation zone are Ryton Park Adders and things didn't improve for them this week as they slipped to another defeat this time against Worksop Miners Welfare 'A' with only Ivan Guilliatt managing to trouble the scorers when he beat Andrew Cave. Welfare's Richard Element and Phil Walton both remained unbeaten with Cave and Walton teaming up to take the doubles to cement a 9-1 victory.
The Toys defeat wasn't the only shock this week as the leaders in Division Two also suffered a surprise defeat. DTH Redlands Monsters were away at Worksop Welfare 'B' but only turned up with two players and were up against it before a ball was hit having to start 3-0 down and when Welfare's Pete Hodgson beat both Orestas and Martynas Riauba the writing was on the wall for the Monsters. Erlands Skels also managed to beat Orestas and he then won the doubles with Hodgson to seal a 7-3 win for Welfare 'B' with Tony Swain going home empty handed on this occasion.
