Handicap Shield Reaches Semi-Final Stage
The Mike Tunningley Handicap Shield quarter-finals were played out this week with the current holders Sparken Hill Hawks in action against club colleagues Sparken Hill Eagles. Despite being in a division below their opponents, the Hawks gave a good account of themselves and in two of the nine games managed to come out on top. Both Lewis Linacre and Paul Wendon both managed to beat the Eagles Keith Swift on aggregate over the two games with Linacre winning 34-31 and Paul Wendon 38-35. Special mention also must go to Linacre who only lost by a single point to the vastly more experienced Brian Allen. Tom Wendon the Hawks third player also chipped in with some vital points that helped the Hawks amass 238 points on the table to the Eagles 352, a lead of 114 points. When the sealed envelope was opened that contained the handicap points it revealed that…full report »
Rovers Miss Chance To Close Gap On Leaders
DTH Redlands Rovers slipped to a narrow defeat this week and missed out on the chance to close the gap on the Division Three league leaders DTH Redlands Rookies. The Rookies had a blank week and it gave the chasing pack the chance to apply some pressure by closing on the leaders, just to let them know they haven’t won the title yet. The Rovers side knew that a win away at Sparken Hill Blue Jays would have put them just 2 points behind the Rookies but they couldn’t quite get over the line. The Blue Jays Kathy McIntyre and Dave Rix recorded two wins each with McIntyre beating Keith Bloomfield and Adam Pinches whilst Rix managed to overcome Bloomfield and Roman Rosser. John McIntyre added a single win over Bloomfield and when Dave Lee and Kathy McIntyre defeated Rosser and Bloomfield in the doubles it was enough for the…full report »
It’s Sansom At The Double………………Double!!
On a night of some fabulous table tennis, Mark Sansom retained his DTH Senior Doubles title albeit with a different partner from last year in Dan Saul. In total, 26 players turned up to do battle in one of the League’s most popular competitions with the number 1 ranked player paired with the 26th ranked player whilst the number 2 player was paired with the 25th and so on.
Games were played up to 21 points with Sansom and Saul topping Group B containing 6 pairings whilst remaining unbeaten returning the maximum 105 points to qualify for the semi-finals.
Also making it through to the semi-final stage from Group B were runners-up Jeff Reay and Mark Fisher who finished just 3 points further back on a 102.
If Group B was a fairly straight forward affair then Group A was anything but as only 2 points separated…full report »
Harriers And Snipers In Close Encounter
The league fixtures took a break this week to make way for the last 16 of the Mike Tunningley Handicap Shield with the match of the round being between Worksop Welfare Harriers and Worksop Welfare Snipers ‘B’ and what a match it turned out to be with just one point separating the sides at the end of the night. For the Snipers Mitchell Radford, Nigel Stent and George Makrakis kept a tight rein on proceedings ensuring that they didn’t give away many points against their opponents in Dan Saul, Graham Stent and Dean Marsh. The pick of the bunch was Nigel Stent who only conceded 53 points throughout the match whilst scoring 126. The Harriers battled bravely throughout the night and scored 185 points to the Snipers 378 but when the sealed envelope that contained the handicap was opened it gave the Harriers 192 points and when added to their…full report »
Monster Of A Gap Opening At Top Of Table
Whilst the teams around them keep dropping points against each other, DTH Redlands Monsters have opened up a gap of 4 points between themselves and their rivals at the top of Division One which could be enough to see them lift the title for the first time. Their latest win came against bottom side Clowne ‘B’ who despite having new signing Joe Zygadlo playing for them could do little to stop the Monsters cruising to victory, although Zygadlo did beat Keiran Tutter to save the Clowne side from being whitewashed. The Monsters twins of Orestas and Martynas Riauba remained unbeaten in the singles as both of them beat Zygadlo, James Weston and Rob Vaughan with Orestas teaming up with Tutter to beat Vaughan and Zygadlo in the doubles to secure a 9-1 win.
The Monsters two main rivals for the Division One title fought out a 5-5 draw which…full report »
