First Finals Evening Results

Yesterday evening saw the first seven of the fifteen finals to be played from the Annual Closed Championships.

A good mix of junior and senior players competing in competitions from Cadet Singles through to 60+ Singles and the Blue Ribbon event of the Open Singles.

Without showing any favouritism towards any age group it has to be said that the cadet and junior players provided some of the best and most competitive matches of the evening.

The evening got underway with our youngest finalists, Will Short and Harrison Holland in the Cadet Singles Final. The quality of table tennis produced by both of these young players was tremendous! The match swung from one player to the other and eventually went down to a deciding end which was as closely fought by both players as had been their previous four games. Eventually Harrison Holland prevailed and won the match and took the title 3 : 2. Well done to both players on getting the evening off to such a good start.

The next match on the table was the 3rd Division Singles Final which was also contested by two of our younger players, James Eaton and Ethan Shevill. As with the cadet singles this match was also very competitive and some high quality table tennis displayed by both James and Ethan and was far beyond the standard normally seen in many Division 3 matches. James won the match and  took the title 3 : 0. Congratulations to both players and especially to James on his victory.

In the Ladies Singles Final first division player Lea Dickinson proved to be too strong for a spirited Issy Saul from division three who should be proud of her performance against such strong opposition. Lea took the match and title 3 : 0

In the 50+ singles Chris Cattell proved to be too strong an opponent on this occasion for Andy Lee, winning the match and taking the title 3 : 0

The fifth match to the table was possibly the best of the evening. James Eaton and Harrison Holland were back on the table after already taking the 3rd Division Singles and Cadet Singles titles respectively. James took the first two games 11:7 and 11:8, only for Harrison to fight back and win the next two 11:7 and 11:9 to take the match into a deciding game. After some wonderful play by both players it was Harrison who took the decider 11:6 to add the Junior Singles title to the Cadet Singles title he won earlier in the evening. Quite an achievement!

In the 60+ singles it was the ever present Steve Lyon who took the title by defeating Pete Eyre 3 : 0.

The last Final of the evening was the Open Singles between Terry Emmerson and Lea Dickinson. As might be expected from Division 1 players the level of table tennis was excellent. Terry won the first game 11:7, but Lea came back taking the second 11:6. However, Terry’s arsenal of shots proved to be too strong for Lea and he went on to take the next two games 8 and 5 and is this season’s Open Singles Champion.

Congratulations to all the finalists and especially the winner of each event, on providing all spectators with an entertaining evening of table tennis. We look forward to a similar level of play on the second finals evening on 22nd of this month.
