It’s X-Youth At The Double!

DTH Redlands X-Youth had double reason to celebrate this week as they added the Reg Wilcox Trophy to the Division Two title they won seven days earlier. The X-Youth side have had a very successful season as in addition to the two trophies they have won in the past week two of them have also added the Division Two Doubles title to their sides collection but more of that later. In the final of the Reg Wilcox Trophy for Division Two sides they were up against Worksop Welfare Snipers ‘B’ who despite being in mid table were no pushovers and the X-Youth trio of Jeff Reay, Clive Eden and Mark Bloomer all had to be on form to defeat them. Because of how the handicapping works the Snipers started with an 84 point lead which the X-Youth side started to slowly but surely eat away at as Eden beat Mark…full report »

Falcons Flying High As They Retain Mike Tunningley Shield

Sparken Hill Falcons were once again crowned Mike Tunningley Handicap Shield winners on a night of some great table tennis at Sparken Hill Academy. The Falcons were up against fellow third division side and club colleagues Sparken Hill Blue Jays who are currently pushing for the third division title and perhaps started as slight favourites even though they knew that they would have to give handicap points to the Falcons at the end of the match. The Falcons started well with Mick Potter doing really well in restricting Ivan Stallworthy to only gaining 4 points on him as he won the first game 21-12 but lost the second 8-21. Jordan Potter followed his Dad's great start by only conceding 10 points to Connor Bettley (who put in a Man Of The Match performance winning all his games on the night) and when team mate Neil Penny only lost by 6…full report »

Lyon Roars Into Over 50's And 60's Finals

Steve Lyon managed to safely negotiate his way into both the Over 50's and the Over 60's Singles finals without much resistance. Lyon who is no stranger to the competition held at Sparken Hill Academy having won both on several occasions over the last few years didn't drop a game all night comfortably beating his opponents in straight sets. In the Over 50's he beat Nick Sievewright 11-1, 11-6, 11-2 in the quarter finals and then did the same to Nigel Stent in the semi finals but the games were much closer with Lyon winning 11-9, 12-10, 13-11. In the Final he will meet Steve Fox who had a bye in the quarter finals before overcoming Malcolm Manuel by 3-1 in the semi finals
Because of the low number of entries the Over 60's competition started at the semi final stage with Lyon taking no time at all to…full report »

Stent And Reay Are Cream Of The Crop In Carnation Cup

On a night of some close matches and some great table tennis at Sparken Hill Academy Nigel Stent and Jeff Reay were crowned the Carnation Cup Champions but they were made to fight every inch of the way by their opponents in the semi-final and final. In their semi-final match the pair were up against Ben Swain and Connor Bettley and got off to a losing start as Bettley with 11 start against Reay did more than enough to beat him 21-15, 21-10 to put him and Swain 1-0 up. Stent then levelled the match at 1-1 as he beat Swain and then joined Reay in the doubles to win that as well to put tem 2-1 ahead with 2 games to play. In the reverse singles Stent couldn't get the better of Bettley going down in straight sets which meant the match went into the deciding game. Reay had…full report »

'Electric' Element Takes Open Singles Title

In the first Championship Finals Nights held at Stanley Street Club Richard Element put on a scintillating display of attacking table tennis to reclaim the Worksop & District Open Singles title he last won 2 years ago. His opponent in the final was Ernest Mpundu who was attempting to defend the title he won last year but in the first two games Element hit the ground running, raining down a barrage of attacking shots that left Mpundu looking a bit shell shocked and before he knew it Mpundu was 2 games to nil down. Mpundu upped his game in the third set and started to hit the ball with much more purpose and power but Element held firm and with some incredible touch and feel around the table took the set 11-8 and with it the kudos of being crowned Open Singles Champion.
Element wasn't content with winning just…full report »
