Monsters Starting To Scare The Top Teams

DTH Redlands Monsters in their debut season in Division One of the Worksop & District Table Tennis League are now starting to worry teams in the top division. Their latest victory came against club colleagues and defending champions DTH Redlands Fluffy Toys who must have gone into the match expecting a win and to continue their push for the title but they were in for a rude awakening as all three Riauba brothers got stuck in. Both Orestas and Martynas Riauba enjoyed great wins over Farrell Anthony and Steve Johnson and when Valentinas also defeated  Johnson it which capped a miserable night for him losing all his three singles games. There was some personal joy for the Fluffy Toys as captain Steve Walker beat all three of the Riauba brothers but his joy was cut short when he partnered Anthony in the doubles against Orestas and Martynas as they won…full report »

Sparken Hill Dominate Mike Tunningley Shield

The Mike Tunningley Shield reached the quarter final stage this week with three teams from Sparken Hill successfully making it through to the semi finals. Division Three leaders Sparken Hill Blue Jays were up against Division Two side DTH Redlands Rookies and despite the divisional difference they won four out of the nine singles matches! Connor Bettley and Ivan Stallworthy both defeated Bob Atkinson and Derek Piper with Dave Rix also contributing vital points to the Blue Jays total and actually took a game off of Dilip Malkan which neither of his team mates managed to do. The Blue Jays managed to score 292 points on the table to their opponents 336 and when the sealed envelope was opened at the end of the match it revealed that they Blue Jays had been awarded 99 handicap points to add to their total which meant they ran out the winners by…full report »

Three Way Tie At The Top Of Division One

The race for the Division One title is as close as ever with the top three sides all level on 21 points each. Only one of the top three played this week and DTH Redlands Fluffy Toys made the most of the fact that their nearest rivals and club colleagues The Rookies match was postponed and Worksop Miners Welfare 'A' had a blank week by beating Stanley Street 'A' 9-1. There were hat tricks for both Steve Walker and Peter Cowburn whilst Steve Johnson enjoyed wins over both Peter Eyre and Alex Millward but lost to the improving Jack Kirkland who was the only Street player to manage to win a singles game on the night and he was unlucky not to make it two wins losing in 5 sets to Cowburn. Cowburn and Johnson then took the doubles in a 5 set thriller against Millward and Eyre to complete…full report »

Tigers In The Hunt For The Mike Tunningley Shield

Division Two side Manton Tigers roared into the quarter finals of the Mike Tunningley Shield with a narrow win over Division One side Sparken Hill Starlings. The man in form for the Tigers was Ron Firth who despite being a division below all three of his opponents managed to only just lose to Helmuth Osborne by 8 points, by 7 to Andy Lee and then went on to draw with Ivan Guilliatt. Firth's efforts backed up with Chris Mokes and Steve Beeston's points proved to be too much for the Starlings despite Osborne giving Beeston a proper hammering as he beat him 21-6, 21-1. On the table the Tigers scored 211 points against 373 for the Starlings but when the handicap envelope was opened the Tigers were given 90 points which when added to their points scored on the table meant they just pipped their opponents by 385 points to…full report »

X-Youth March On

DTH Redlands X-Youth, the runaway leaders in Division Two continued with their 100% league record this week and in doing so put even more daylight between themselves and their nearest title rivals. Their latest victory came against Sparken Hill Eagles who are seeing their own promotion aspirations disappearing after a recent poor run of form has seen them lose their last three league games. The Eagles tormenter this week was X-Youth's Jeff Reay who is currently top of the division's singles averages and he lived up to that position by beating all three Eagles players in John Hallgarth, James Wormwell and Mark Fisher without too much trouble. Reay was well supported by Matt Turner who had good wins over both Wormwell and Fisher with his win over Wormwell going the distance. Clive Eden added a win over Fisher but couldn't repeat the feat against Wormwell and Hallgarth. Reay and Eden…full report »
