Cypriot Sides Keep The Pressure On Blue Jays
Worksop Welfare Cypriots 'A' and 'B' teams both won this week to keep the heat on the current leaders in Division Three Sparken Hill Blue Jays. The 'A' team had a pretty straight forward night of it as they comfortably beat an improving Real North Notts 'B' side 10-0. There were hat tricks all round for Nigel Stent, Kay Wilson and Farhad Saiepour with Saiepour now making it 18 wins out of 18 and looking ever increasingly like going through the whole season unbeaten. Although their opponents didn't manage to win a set all night there are encouraging signs that Glen Gillgrass and his young team are making improvements in what for some of them is their first ever season in any league.
Cypriots 'B' had a much tougher time than their club colleagues as they were up against Sparken Hill Falcons who before the match were only one…full report »
Pairs Competition Gets Off To A Cracking Start
This season's Carnation Cup got off to a fabulous start with some great table tennis by all the players involved. The early stages of the competition were spread across two nights with the first night kicking off with one Preliminary Round match in which Mitchell Radford and Farhad Saiepour dispatched Adrian Smith and Dean Marsh 4-1 despite Radford losing to Marsh in the opening game.
In the First Round they went on to comfortably raced into an unassailable 3-0 lead against George Makrakis and Kyle Moore which meant that they didn't actually have to play all of the 5 scheduled games as they were already through.
Ben Swain and Connor Bettley had what looked on paper a resounding 5-0 win over Andy Lee and Sam McFarland in what ironically had some of the closest games scores of the first round. Lee who had to give 14 start to…full report »
Richard's In His Element As Welfare Stretch Lead At The Top
Worksop Miners Welfare 'A' are now starting to put a little bit of daylight between themselves at the top of Division One and the teams trying to chase them down. Their latest win against Manton Nomads was mainly down to Richard Element who had a terrific night enjoying victories over Sarah Short, Kartik Lakhani and Chris Cattell to set his team on their way to what turned out to be a narrow 6-4 victory. Element was well supported by Mark Stanfield who had wins over Short and Lakhani with Jamie Hudd adding a solo win over Lakhani. Cattell with 2, Short with 1 and a win in the doubles for Cattell and Short over Element and Hudd weren't quite enough to get a share of the spoils for the Nomads side.
If Richard Element was the man in form for Welfare 'A' then Jack Kirkland was the same for…full report »
Holders Safely Through In Mike Tunningley Shield
The league took a break this week from the usual divisional battles for promotion and relegation places as the league's flagship Cup Competition , The Mike Tunningley Handicap Shield took centre stage. Last year's winners Sparken Hill Falcons safely navigated their way through a potentially trick first round match against an in form DTH Redlands X-Youth who currently sit at the top of Division Two, one division above the Falcons. Because of the divisional difference the Falcons were always going to be awarded a sizeable handicap and was going to come down to how many points X-Youth could keep the Falcons down to in the match. All three X-Youth players Jeff Reay, Clive Eden and Mark Bloomer all beat the Falcons trio of Mick Potter, Kyle Moore and Jordan Potter 2-0 and therefore amassed the maximum points a team can score on the table of 378. Jordan Potter put up…full report »
