Elks And Cougars Keep Pressure On Leaders

With Division Three leaders DTH Redlands Rookies not having a league game the two teams chasing them took the opportunity to close the gap on them with both On-Line Elks and Ryton Park Cougars winning this week. The Elks had what looked like at first glance a comfortable 9-1 win over DTH Redlands Liver Birds but with many of the games being tight it was far from easy for the Elks. However, both Jonno Blood and Neil Houghton both won three games each with Glen Gillgrass adding a brace of wins losing out to Paul Jordan in a 5 set thriller. Ted Rizzo was making his debut for the Liver Birds and he can be pleased with his first ever game in the league and although he didn't manage to beat any of the Elks players he did give Neil Houghton a run for his money in losing 6-11, 10-12,…full report »

Hodgson And Kirkland Take DTH Senior Doubles Title

On a night of some pulsating table tennis played in a fabulous spirit Pete Hodgson and Andy Kirkland came through some tough matches to be crowned DTH Senior Doubles Champions. 28 players entered the competition and after being seeded in accordance with the latest player averages they were then paired up with the No.1 seed playing with the No.28 seed, the No.2 seed with the 27th seed and so on and then the 14 pairs were drawn into two groups of seven.
Matches were up to 31 and Group A was won by Rob Vaughan & Chris Cutts who won all their 6 matches scoring the maximum points of 186 with some steady table tennis to qualify for the semi-finals but who would be joining them from Group A was a much closer affair which went right down to the wire. Pete Eyre & Glen Gillgrass who won 5…full report »

Roosters On A Roll

DTH Redlands Roosters continued their relentless charge towards the Division One title with their 8th straight league win in a row but they didn't have things all their own way in their latest victory. The Roosters Captain Rick Harris had to play a player up from Division Two with Orestas Riauba joining Harris and Clive Mitchell to maintain the Roosters unbeaten start to the season in the league but they can count themselves a little fortunate that their opponents Worksop Welfare 'A' had to do the same and were also without last season's Open Singles Champion Richard Element. Harris performed the Captain's role by beating all three of Welfare's players in Stuart Element, Dave Marsh and Ken Alvey who was playing up from Division Two and he was well supported by Mitchell who lost out to Element but beat both Marsh and Alvey with Riauba adding a solo win over…full report »

Sports In Battle To Avoid The Drop

After winning only one of their six league games so far this season Division Two side Manton Sports have suddenly found themselves deep in relegation trouble and this week's loss to Worksop Miners Welfare 'B' has not helped their cause. After finishing 4th in Division Two last season and adding to their squad in the summer, Sports had real reasons to feel optimistic about this seasons campaign but after slipping to their sixth league defeat out of their first seven matches results need to improve if they are to avoid relegation into Division Three at the end of the season.
The three Sports players tasked this week to try and turn round their fortunes were John Lowde, Alan Wilson and Richard Robinson but they came up against one of the strongest sides in the Division in Worksop Welfare 'B' and they showed no mercy to the Sports team with…full report »

Defending Champions Safely Through First Round Of Carnation Cup

Both last year's winners Andy Lee and George Makrakis, safely navigated their way through to the next round of the Carnation Cup albeit with different partners this time around. This year Andy Lee was paired with Chris Clemson with Lee taking the lead by winning both his singles matches against Malcolm Manuel and Jonno Blood with Clemson losing both his singles matches which made the doubles the pivotal game of the match which Lee and Clemson won to cement a 3-2 win.
George Makrakis was paired with Paul Linfield and they were up against Jack Kirkland and Mark  Bloomer in what became the longest and closest match of the first round ties. Kirkland and Makrakis kicked things off with Makrakis starting 7-0 as per the handicap system but despite being 7-0 down Kirkland managed to win the first game 21-18 and then managed to nick an even closer second…full report »
