Eagles Fall Further Behind Leaders
Sparken Hill Eagles lost more ground to Clowne ‘C’, the Division Two leaders this week as they dropped points in the race for the Division Two title as they drew with Carlton X-Youth in the race for the title. X-Youth welcomed back Simon Holley who was making his first appearance of the season and despite not playing for a while he managed to walk away with the Player Of The Match award. Hooley recorded a hat-trick of singles wins against Chris Tilstone, John Hallgarth and Keith Swift and then had a hand in winning the doubles with Mark Bloomer against Tilstone and Hallgarth. Mark Bloomer added a win over Tilstone to add to Hooleys wins to secure the draw. For the Eagles, Hallgarth and Swift both won two each beating Bloomer and Mark Cooper with Tilstone adding a single win over Cooper to leave the scores level at 5-5.

No Cup Upset As Woodpeckers Establish Pecking Order
The first round of the Mike Tunningley Shield threw up no shocks this week but only one match out of the three that were scheduled actually got to be played.
First Division side Sparken Hill Woodpeckers were drawn away at Second Division Worksop Welfare Harriers ‘A’ and with a handicap system used in the competition then a cup upset can often be caused by a team further down the league pyramid but the Woodpeckers made sure that it didn’t happen on this occasion.
The trio of Steve Fox and Orestas and Martynas Riauba had to make sure that they accrued enough points on the table to build up a significant lead so that they didn’t end up losing the match when the handicap points were added at the end of the night. The Harriers side did give them a few concerns along the way by narrowly losing some…full report »
Stanley Street Keep Pressure On Leaders
Second placed Stanley Street kept the pressure on league leaders Worksop Miners Welfare in Division One this week with a 6-4 win over bottom side Sparken Hill Starlings. With the Welfare side having no game this week due to a postponement, Stanley Street took full advantage and narrowed the gap at the top to just 3 points despite not fielding their strongest possible team. No Pete Eyre or Alex Millward this week, instead in came Mark Sansom and Dave Hodgkin to join Terry Emmerson for the Stanley Street outfit. Emmerson won his usual 3 singles matches to make it 17 out of 17 wins so far this season. He was well supported by Sansom who registered wins over both Andy Kirkland and Ivan Guilliatt before losing to Andy Lee in straight sets. Emmerson and Sansom then teamed up in the doubles to beat Lee and Guilliatt to complete the scoring…full report »
Sparken Hill Lead The Way In Division Three
The top three places in Division Three are currently occupied by Sparken Hill teams who all enjoyed wins this week. Third placed Blue Jays had a solid win away at Worksop Welfare Harriers ‘C’ with Player Of The Match Kathy McIntyre and Dave Lee both winning all of their three singles games against Nick Sievewright, Bill Fowler and Cliff Briggs. The Blue Jays third player Dave Rix also enjoyed wins over Bill Fowler and Cliff Briggs but couldn’t get past Sievewright losing in 4 sets to the Harriers player.
Sievewright then teamed up with Fowler to beat Lee and John McIntyre in the doubles but it wasn’t nearly enough to stop the Blue Jays running out 8-2 winners.
Second placed Falcons were at home against another Sparken Hill side in The Pigeons and as expected claimed all 3 points with a convincing 9-1 win although the match didn’t…full report »
Eagles Have Their Wings Clipped
Division Two leaders Sparken Hill Eagles lost their 100% record this week as they lost to second placed Clowne ‘C’. Man Of The Match for Clowne was Ben Crapper who despite making his first appearance of the season returned an impressive hat trick of singles wins against Brian Allen, Keith Swift and Chris Tilstone. His win against Allen was the most impressive of his three wins as it came in straight sets and at a vital time of the match as it set Clowne ‘C’ up for a 7-3 win. Perry Bradford also put in a great performance for Clowne as he was full of cold and had to clamber out of his sick bed to play and the effort was worthwhile as he beat both Swift and Tilstone and when Rob Vaughan also beat Swift and Tilstone it completed the scoring for Clowne. Allen won two singles for the…full report »
