Davies Completes Double

In his first ever season in the Worksop & District Table Tennis League, Clowne ‘A’s John Davies completed an impressive double as he took the Open Doubles title to go with his Open Singles title he won at the end of February. On the second of the League’s Finals nights held at Stanley Street Club, Davis and his partner Richard Element were slight favourites to take the Doubles title before the night began. Davies and Element soon ran into a two games to love lead winning 11-9, 11-6 but their opponents Rick Harris and Ernest Mpundu hit bac to take the third 11-7 but couldn’t sustain the fightback and ended up losing the decisive fourth game 12-10 which gave Davies and Element victory. Davies now has an unprecedented treble in his sights as he aims to win the Worksop Masters at the end of April.

The Great Escape!

In their final Division Two league match of the 2018/19 season Worksop Welfare Cannon managed to haul themselves out of the bottom two places and escape from the relegation trap door into Division Three. Welfare Cannon had been in the bottom two places since losing to Manton Tigers way back on the 11th of October of last year, but they never gave up hope of escaping and went into their match away at Carlton X-Youth knowing a win could see them survive depending on other results around them. The Cannon side soon set about their opponents with Kay Wilson beating Andrew Dolby in the deciding fifth game and when Perry Bradford did the same against Mark Bloomer it gave them a 2-0 lead. 2-0 soon turned into 3-0 when Dilip Malkan beat Mark Cooper and when Wilson beat Bloomer to put the Cannon side 4-0 ahead they were on the…full report »

All Still To Play For In Relegation Battles

With all the titles won in each of the three Divisions the spotlight is now on the fight to avoid he drop into Division Two and Three. In Division One Clowne ‘B’ are already doomed to dropping out of the division which leaves two teams fighting it out to avoid the last relegation spot and ironically Clowne ‘B’ have still to play both teams in their last two fixtures! Sparken Hill Starlings are just two points ahead of Worksop Welfare Snipers ‘A’ and they were looking to take advantage of the Snipers not having a game this week and to pull further away from them in their home game with Worksop Miners Welfare. Redlands Teams Secure Two Titles In Same Week

Two DTH Redlands table tennis teams won matches this week that meant that they secured their respective Divisional titles. DTH Redlands Monsters clinched the Division One title with the narrowest of 6-4 wins against their closest rivals and club colleagues DTH Redlands Fluffy Toys. The Monsters win against the only side that could stop them from winning the title was mainly down to a superb Valentinas Riauba hat trick of wins against Peter Cowburn, Farrell Anthony and Sarah Short with the win against Short coming in the last game of the night which secured the win for the Monsters. Valentinas’s brothers Orestas and Martynas both chipped in with a win each, both against Anthony with a win in the doubles for Valentinas and Orestas against Short and Cowburn to complete the scoring. Deadly Davies Takes Open Singles Title

In his first season playing in the Worksop Table Tennis League John Davies was crowned Worksop Open Singles Champion on Tuesday night at Stanley Street Club. In the first of the Leagues Finals Nights, Davies who plays for Clowne Table Tennis Club defeated the current holder of the title in Ernest Mpundu in an entertaining final. Davies took the first game 11-6 before Mpundu hit back to take the next game 11-5 to level the contest. In a very close third game Davies just managed to win it 12-10 before going on to take the 4th set 11-7 and with it the Open Singles title.
Mpundu soon got over the disappointment of losing his Open Singles crown by successfully defending his Over 40’s Singles title. In the final he was up against Chris Cattell who he has beaten in the previous two finals and he was soon into his…full report »
