Cowburn Is The Master

On a night of some fabulous table tennis Peter Cowburn was crowned Worksop Masters Champion 2019. Six of the top players in the Worksop League battled it out for not only the honour of lifting the trophy but also a £100 prize money for the winner and £50 for the runner-up.
The six players were split into two groups of three players with the winner of each group going through to the final and with two former winners of the Masters, a former winner of the Open Singles and the current Open Singles champion playing in the event it was going to be a close-run thing.

Nightingales Win Mike Tunningley Shield

Sparken Hill Nightingales pulled off a great victory against DTH Redlands Rovers to take the Mike Tunningley Handicap Shield for the first time. The Nightingales trio of Harrison Holland, Charlie Shepherd and Isabella Saul knew that they would not score as many points as their more illustrious opponents, so they fought for every point all the way through the match to give themselves a chance of victory. They did have some small victories in their tussles with their opponents as Holland and Shepherd both took a game off of Roman Rosser whilst the Rovers other Keith Bloomfield remained unbeaten all night and returned the maximum amount of points possible in this format of the game.

Divisional Trophy Finalists Now Known

The finalists for all three Divisional Handicap Trophy competitions have now been confirmed after the last series of group games have been played or not as the case may be. With so many games being conceded in the group stages in all three divisions, a rethink on the format of the competition will no doubt take place before the start of next season.
The final of the MBE Handicap Trophy will be between DTH Redlands Rookies and Sparken Hill Blue Jays. The Blue Jays topped their group after they overcame their club colleagues Sparken Hill Hawks by 422 points to 401 to cement their place in the final after earlier winning their opening group match in the competition and winning their second game after their opposition conceded it.

Stanley Street Make David Hooton Trophy Final

Stanley Street ‘A’ reached the final of the David Hooton Trophy with a victory against Clowne ‘A’ in the second of their Group B matches. The Stanley Street trio of Terry Emmerson, Peter Eyre and Alex Millward put in a real team effort to score 336 points on the table with special mention going to Emmerson who enjoyed a great win over this years Open Singles Champion John Davies. The Clowne ‘A’ side of Davies, Kartik Lakhani and James Wormwell battled hard to reach 324 points scored but when both teams handicap points were added it gave Stanley Street ‘A’ victory by 467 points to 452.
In the other group in Division One, Worksop Welfare Snipers ‘A’ are the favourites to qualify as they currently sit top of Group ‘B’ with two wins from two games. Their latest win came against Worksop Miners Welfare who like the Snipers had…full report »

Divisional Cup Competitions Get Under Way

With the league season now finished the spotlight fell on the Divisional Handicap Trophy with all three Divisions getting under way this week. Each competition has 8 teams in them and are split into two groups of four with the winners of each group meeting in the final on Wednesday the 24th of April at Sparken Hill Academy.
The David Hooton Handicap Trophy for Division One sides got underway with a win for Worksop Welfare Snipers ‘A’ against DTH Redlands Fluffy Toys with Pete Hodgson playing well for the Snipers side. With each game being played over two games up to 21 Hodgson only just lost to Sarah Short 40-36 over the two games and he then went on to beat Steve Walker 42-35. Hodgson was well supported by his teammates Jim Westwood and Russ Webster who contributed vital points. The Snipers scored 241 points on the table to…full report »
