It's The Riauba Brothers, At The Double!!
The last match to be played in the 2013-14 Winter League season was a match was a notable one as for the first time in the League's 79 year history Identical twins won one of the League's Doubles Competitions. Orestas and Martynas Riauba in their debut season in the League overcame Jack Tarr and Keiran Tutter to win the 3rd Division Doubles title. The match which was held over from the Championships Finals nights due to holiday commitments was played at Manton Miners Welfare Club and the Riauba twins made short work of the first two games winning them 11-3 and 11-2 as Tutter and Tarr just couldn't get a look in against some excellent table tennis being played against them. Stanley Street 'C' Finish Season On A High
Stanley Street 'C' put behind them the disappointment of finishing Runners up in both Division Three and the Handicap Shield to win the MBE Handicap Trophy at the expense of their club colleagues Stanley Street Cypriots. In what was a fabulous advert for the Worksop League the match was played in a terrific spirit despite both sides desperate to win the Trophy. Due to the handicapping system The Cypriots started the match 64 points in front which reflected both teams respective league positions but their lead was cut to 44 as Stanley Street C's Andy Kirkland beat Graham Stent and Orestas Riauba beat Tom Parker. The Stanley Street 'C' team may have thought that the trend would continue but the next three matches left the 'C' team still 44 points ahead as Kirkland and Martynas Riauba drew with the Cypriot's doubles pairing of Parker and Adam Hamilton, Orestas Riauba then…full report »
Lyon Roars On Championship Finals Night!
Global Marble's Steve Lyon added the Over 40's and Over 50's Singles titles to the Over 60's title that he won three weeks previously to become the first player in the League's history to hold all three Veterans titles at the same time.
Lyon's opponent in both the Over the 40's and Over 50's finals was his fellow Global team mate Kalpesh Bhatt and with both players knowing each other's games so well it was always going to be a tight affair. In the Over 40's final Lyon soon raced into a 2-0 lead but back came Bhatt to win the next game but he couldn't repeat the feat in the next game with Lyon taking it 11-8 and the match 3-1 to take the title.

Three Nights That Determined The Destiny Of Division Two Honours
In the closest finish to a league title in years Stanley Street 'B' have claimed the Division Two title by the virtue of having won one set more than their rivals DTH Redlands Joggers. Andy Kirkland and Dennis Learad the respective captains have both guided their teams well throughout the season long campaign but the destiny of the title came down to the final match of the season for both teams.
Stanley Street 'B' were the first to play their final match of the season on the Tuesday night against Global Marble 'B' who Street had beaten 6-4 and then drawn with earlier in the season and on paper looked like tricky opponents but any thoughts that Global had of halting Street's push for the title were soon dispelled as the Street trio of Jack Kirkland, Matt Williams and Paul Linfield soon set about their task. Rookies Experience Tells As They Win The Handicap Shield
DTH Redlands Rookies lifted the league's flag ship cup competition The Handicap Shield with a narrow win over Ryton Park Falcons in what turned out to be a very entertaining and tense final but played with great sportsmanship between both teams. The Rookies Alan Keeling did the most damage for his team returning the maximum points possible whilst conceding the fewest points of any player on the night. Keeling was well supported by Captain Derek Piper and Bob Atkinson who both made significant contributions to give the Rookies a total of 352 points on the night. All three Falcons players can be proud of their efforts, not just in the final but in previous rounds as actually reaching the final is no mean feat.
