Smith & Hallgarth Take DTH Senior Doubles Title
Keith Smith and John Hallgarth claimed the first trophy of the season as they battled their way to be crowned DTH Senior Doubles winners on a fabulous night of table tennis at Ryton Park School. Along with 6 other doubles pairings Smith and Hallgarth qualified for the final after they finished second in the round robin format which would decide the finalists. Their opponents in the final would be Rob Vaughan & Alex Olliffe after they topped the group dropping only one point along the way which also included a 31-26 victory over Smith & Hallgarth which probably made them slight favourites going into the final. Division Two side Manton Tigers pulled off the shock of the season so far as they knocked out the runaway leaders of Division One DTH Redlands Fluffy Toys out of the Handicap Shield competition. Despite not playing their strongest side yet this season DTH Redlands Fluffy Toys still sit proudly at the top of Division One with a 100% record. For The Roosters Tom McIntosh had a fabulous win over the previously unbeaten Steve Walker whilst also beating Learad and with both Piotr Sliwa and Rick Harris also beating Learad the Roosters went into the doubles rubber at the end of the evening needing to win it to snatch a draw. Sliwa and McIntosh started well against the Toys Cowburn and Walker…full report »
