Eagles Soar Into David Hooton Trophy Final

Ryton Park Eagles put there miserable league form behind them to knock Worksop Miners Welfare 'A' out of the David Hooton Handicap Trophy and put themselves into the final where they will play Stanley Street 'A'. It was a real team performance for the Eagles with all three players making telling contributions to their teams points total especially Helmuth Osborne who had good wins over both Andrew Cave and Stuart Element to get his side off to a great start but he wasn't alone as Alex Olliffe also chipped in with a convincing win over Cave. For the Welfare side Dave Marsh won both his singles matches comfortably but it was in the three doubles games that the Eagles had most success winning two of them and only losing the third one by 4 points which all meant that the Eagles had only lost by 2 points on the night…full report »

Mpundu Claims Hat Trick Of Titles

Ernest Mpundu of DTH Redlands Roosters bagged himself three titles at the first of the Leagues two Championship Finals nights held at Stanley Street Club. His first title came in the final of the Open Singles at the expense of Tom McIntosh who again has had to settle for the runners up trophy after also losing in last year's final. Mpundu won the first two sets 11-7 and 12-10 before McIntosh hit back to win the third 11-8 but Mpundu wasn't going to be denied and he won the fourth set 11-4 to claim the title. Mpundu then went on to add the Over 40's Singles title to his collection by beating Pete Hodgson who despite playing in a division below Mpundu put in a good performance but it wasn't enough to stop Mpundu winning in straight sets.
The closest game of the night came in the final of…full report »

Redlands Teams Set To Win All Three Divisional Titles

Barring an almighty collapse of biblical proportions all three divisions in the Worksop & District Table Tennis League will this year be won by DTH Redlands teams.
Division One can now only be won by a Redlands team as mathematically a non Redlands team cannot catch DTH Redlands Roosters who lead the division and are 20 points in front of the 3rd placed team with only a maximum 18 points on offer between now and the end of the season.
The Roosters continued their unblemished league record this week with their 15th straight victory with a 10-0 win over relegation threatened Stanley Street 'A' who's fight to avoid the drop hasn't been helped recently by player selection issues. For the Roosters, Rick Harris, Steve Fox and Ernest Mpundu all won their respective three singles games against Jack Kirkland, Matthew Williams and Peter Eyre with only 3 of…full report »

Nothing Fawlty With Manuel's Challenge For Over 50's Title

Malcolm Manuel reached the final of the Over 50's Singles for the second year running after producing some faultless table tennis. He swept aside Jim Westwood in his first match winning in straight sets and in the quarter final his opponent Stuart Element fared no better as he was also beaten in straight sets. Manuel's semi-final match was against Helmuth Osborne and in a close and often fiery contest Manuel eventually overcame his opponent 13-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9 to make it through to the final where he will meet Mick Brooks. Brooks made it through to the final with a 3-0 win over Chris Clemson and then followed that up with a narrow 3-2 win against Peter Eyre before knocking out last year's winner Steve Lyon 3-1 in the semi-final.
In the Over 60's Singles Steve Lyon went one better than in the Over 50's as he reached the…full report »

Roosters Edge Closer To Division One Title

Division One side DTH Redlands Roosters took another step towards the Division One title this week with a comfortable 8-2 win over bottom side Ryton Park Adders. The result has massively contrasting meanings for both sides with the Roosters going 11 points clear at the top and with only 7 league matches remaining it means that the Roosters would have to lose at least 4 out of the last 7 games for the team in second place to catch them and as they haven't lost a single league game all season then the likelihood of that happening is pretty slim. At the opposite end of the division one table the Adders have had a tough time of it this season having not won a single game and managing only three draws so far and find themselves a massive 10 points from safety and look all but relegated. Despite the gulf…full report »
